Come and join us for this enjoyable and creative hands-on workshop which introduces you to the wonderful world of stained glass. Using the jewel like qualities of glass you will learn to make your own delightful Seaside themed Suncatchers.
This is a guided workshop suitable for both beginners and those with some experience and everyone will be working at the same pace during the day. At each stage in the process Caroline will begin with a practical demonstration so that everyone is clear what they need to do next.
What is Copper Foiling?
Copper foiling also known as the Tiffany Technique involves scoring and shaping coloured glass, which is then wrapped in a self-adhesive copper tape and soldered together creating 2D and 3D objects.
What will I make?
You will have a glorious choice of Seaside designs to work from including beach huts, seagulls, boats, fish, seahorses, lighthouses, ......! all of which are suitable for those with little or no experience. You may me able to make more than one Suncatcher, time permitting.
At the end of the course, you will have learnt many new skills and will take home your very own Glass Suncatchers to be proud of as well as a new skill for life!
You will learn to:
• Cut glass safely and competently
• Choose an appropriate selection of glass for your project
• Cut glass to a prepared pattern
• Grind glass safely and effectively
• Wrap each piece of glass neatly in copperfoil
• Flux ready for soldering
• Use a soldering iron safely
• Tin each piece
• Solder the pieces together
• Attach hooks and decorative wire details
• Apply patina
• Clean and polish your finished piece
What do I need to bring?
The tutor will provide all the tools and equipment you need as well as a good selection of vibrant coloured glass for you to choose from. You will however need to bring your own apron, note book and something to wrap your finished pieces to take them home safely.
There will be tea/coffee etc available all day but please bring your own lunch.
Health and safety
Please ensure you wear closed in shoes. Long hair will need to be tied up and please don't wear dangling scarves and jewellery. Safety glasses will be provided.
As we are working with lead-based solder this day is not suitable for pregnant or nursing mothers. Also please be aware that the day will involve periods of standing as well as physical activities such as cutting glass, wrapping the glass neatly with copper tape and handling a soldering iron, so there is a need for good manual dexterity and if you wear them don't forget your glasses.
Suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years.
