Creative Summer School 2022

​ 
Creative Summer School is a week-long programme, thoughtfully curated to inspire creativity in a mindful and sociable environment.
Workshops will be educational, immersive, and fun. Our varied programme includes lost arts that are making a modern comeback as well as newer crafts that are trending right now. Some offer practical skills and others delight with their quirkiness.
Our tutors have tailored their workshops to complement this year’s focus – Nature. 
This year's Creative Summer School is generously supported by Sage Residential.

Introduction to Stained Glass - A Seaside Sun Catcher

Join us for this enjoyable and creative hands-on workshop which introduces you to the wonderful world of stained glass. Using the jewel like qualities of glass you will learn to make your own delightful seaside themed suncatchers.


This is a guided workshop suitable for both beginners and those with some experience and everyone will be working at the same pace during the day. At each stage in the process, Caroline will begin with a practical demonstration so that everyone is clear what they need to do next.

Stained Glass Nesting Birds

Join Caroline for an enjoyable and creative hands-on day and make your very own beautiful copper-foiled bird in a nest!


Using the copper-foiling technique made so famous by Tiffany, you will make a glass bird and learn to create a copper wire and hazel twig nest for it to sit in. The nest is then soldered to a copper post to push into a pot or into the ground outside. There will be a choice of Caroline’s original bird designs for you to choose from including a Wren, Blackbird, Robin and Dove.


This is a guided day for those who already have some experience of glass cutting, it is however suitable for beginners to copper foiling as well as those who have some previous foiling experience.

Make your own personalised sterling silver ring or bangle under the expert tuition and supportive guidance of Wendy Murphy from WMM Silver.


During the workshop, you will be taught all the skills you need to size, cut, file, solder and polish your ring or bangle. You can also add a texture to your piece and lettering and symbols on the inside.

Join Joe for an evening meditation session.


Shifu Joe has been teaching for over 17 years and has trained in martial arts for 34 years. He has trained at the Shaolin Temple, Songshan (with Shi Xing Jun) and Zixao Palace, Wudang (Xiao Long You, Xuezhi). He has trained with many notable figures such as Shi YanXin, Geshe Damcho Yonten and Dr Yeung. 


For all abilities, no experience necessary and no equipment needed. Wear loose fitted clothing and light, flat shoes or trainers that you can move in.

​Taijiquan & Qigong

A wonderful way to spend an evening at Kingshill House, where your instructor Joe will support you through gentle stretching, warm ups, forms, push hands and Neigong (internal work).


Taiji Quan (Tai Chi Chuan) is a Chinese martial art that uses gentle, flowing movements to create and balance inner energy (called Chi or Qi). It has mental, emotional and physical benefits, such as increased agility, self-confidence, better memory, and mindfulness. 


Our moves sometimes may look like 'slow motion Kung Fu'. The core goal is always building and balancing our energy. Qigong exercises can support the healing of chronic illness, emotional stress, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Many Martial Arts (such as Kung Fu and Taji Quan) have borrowed and contain elements of Qigong.


This class is for all abiliites, and no experience necessary. No equipment needed - wear loose fitted clothing and light, flat shoes or trainers you can move in.

Maternal Journal Taster Session

Join local artist and mother Athene Greig for an evening taster session of Maternal Journal Dursley - an inclusive and safe space to create, reflect and share.


The weekly group will be launching in July for a running of 4 weeks from 28th July until 18th August. Book your space here.


We invite those in pregnancy, postpartum and beyond to join us in a supportive group for creative journalling.


The taster session is free with a suggested donation of £3 to cover materials and will give you a flavor, and get to know other like minded people along with the artist Athene Greig.


The group sessions starting in July and running through August will be £10 per session or £32 for all 4 if booked in advance. More details can be found here.


​Each session will include an introduction, a guided journal activity, followed by time for sharing and listening.

We will journal together around a table in a relaxed, informal setting, with easy to use materials.

Meditative Loom Weaving

The ancient craft of weaving has long been recognised for it's humble practical beauty and meditative qualities while creating gorgeous decorative projects for your home. You can also reflect and relax through the repeating motions of yarn winding over the loom.


You will learn how to warp up a simple wooden loom and the techniques used to add different textures and interest in your wall hanging including Tabby weave, Rya knots and loops, Soumak braid, egyption knots to name a few. You will be shown how to finish your weave, tie everything off on the reverse of your wall hanging and how to attach your dowel ready for hanging.


You will get to use lots of different fibres and wools, also including soft string, Merino and Alpaca wool and strips of fabric.

Working with the sun or UV light source, learn how to create beautiful floral Prussian blueprints using the Cyanotype process.


Be inspired by the botanical prints created by English botanist and photographer Anna Atkins who pioneered the use of the Cyanotype process to capture images of algae, ferns, flowers, and other plants. By using the photogram method, she was considered the first female photographer and self-published the first book illustrated with photographic images.

Celebrate the beauty and intricacy that nature creates, by making your own nature based ceramic pieces.


Using local grown and foraged plants imprinted into the clay, we will be using handbuilding techniques and drape moulds to make your own completely unique pieces. Using drape moulds allows complete beginners to experience the joy of making pottery completely from scratch. With a variety of different shapes, you’ll each be able to make your own dish, to be used for everything from holding jewellery to serving nibbles. There will also be the option to add a ring stand to your dish too.
Making ceramics can be a deeply mindful experience, and it is very satisfying to make something so functional and beautiful.

You will learn the process of sublimation printing using disperse dyes. We will begin by selecting leaves and grasses to print with and applying colour to the leaves using the heat press.

Learn the Art of Verre Églomisé - Create a Gold Leaf Pendant

Practice the art of Verre Églomisé you will gild your own clear glass cabochon in a choice of genuine yellow gold or white gold leaf. Whilst waiting for your gold leaf to dry you can design your own pattern or subject in which to draw onto your pendant later. You will also be given a pre-gilded cabochon to practice the technique on before your main one to the take home and wear for years to come, or gift to someone special.

Create a Paperweight Decoupage with Gilding

Create your own paperweight decoupage and learn the art of decorative paper on glass, with the additional backing of dutch metal leaf in gold, silver or copper. You will cut out and carefully arrange your chosen paper design onto a 7cm round paperweight. Once the paper design is dry you can add a backing colour of gold, silver or copper dutch metal leaf. Keep your beautiful design or gift to friends and show off your crafting skills.

Creative Summer School Soiree 
Saturday 16th July, 6–8.30pm

At the end of the week, we welcome you to join us for a Summer School Soiree!
Students and tutors will be invited to exhibit their work at the House, enjoy a glass of fizz, and celebrate the variety of crafts made throughout the week. If you would like to exhibit the work that you have created during the Creative Summer School then please let your tutor or the Kingshill House team know. Works will be displayed for the Soiree evening only, and then you are free to take them home or collect them the following week.
