‘A Fondness for the Foreign’ in Handel’s London
Music by Castrucci, Handel, Barsanti, Corelli, Vivaldi and Scarlatti for recorder, flute and harpsichord
Georg Frederic Handel took London by storm in 1711, with the first Italian opera ever to be staged in England. Sensational and dramatic, melodic and emotional, Rinaldo kick-started a new London music scene with a fondness for all things Italian - not just opera, but also the vigorous and virtuoso instrumental stylings of Corelli, Scarlatti and Vivaldi. Attracted by the prospect of fame and fortune, Italian musicians including Castrucci, Barsanti and Geminiani had all settled in London by 1715, to try their luck on English, Scottish and Irish audiences.
