After the success of Summer School 2018, We at Kingshill House are delighted to announce that our second annual summer school will be from 15th – 19th July 2019.

You will be able to book onto a wide range of wonderful Art and Craft Workshops. (Please download our Summer School Brochure)

The cost for these workshops is as follows:
1 Day - £65
2 Days - £110
3 Days - £155
4 Days - £195
5 Days - £225

All workshop costs include morning refreshments, 2 course buffet style lunch and afternoon refreshments.

Bookings are subject to availability and are based on a first come first served basis and payment must be made in full once the booking is received and confirmed.

Ceramic Mugs, Jugs and Vases with Jackie White

Join Jackie on this wonderful 2 day Ceramic workshop where you will get to create you very own Jug, Mug and Vase over the course of the 2 days.
​
Under the guidance of Jackie you will use the ‘soft slabbing’ and ‘hand-building techniques and learn how to create different textures and imprints.

Needlefelt Fairy House with Jackie Ginley

Have you ever wondered where fairies live? Well I have heard a rumour that they like to live with us, but only if we give them a special place all of their own.
​
Come along and learn how to make a needlefelted house, decorated with flowers and blossoms to entice any house hunting fairy to your home. We will also make birds, hedgehogs and other furry animals to keep them company.

Summer Days Watercolours with Sheena Maynard

We will look at how watercolour paints behave, and how they mix together to make an infinite range of new shades and tones.

Students will be guided all the way with personal tuition and demonstrations, using a variety of techniques, then we will put it all to the test with a completed painting.
​
Watercolour may not be the easiest of mediums to master, but the joy of sploshing some paint around is great fun and if all that results in a good painting at the end of it, then that is even better. (Full material list available here)

Fused Glass Flower Meadow Storm Lantern with Caroline Lambert

You will make a series of 3 fused glass panels incorporating a wild flower meadow theme to create a fabulous storm lantern. Using the remarkable process of glass fusion  

If you have done it before you can continue to explore glass as a creative medium and hopefully pick up a few more tips and tricks along the way.
At the end of the workshop your project will be taken back to Caroline's studio for firing and will be returned to Kingshill for collection approximately  a week later.

​Mosaic Garden House Number or Wall Art with Yvette Green

Bring a touch of your own personality out into your garden with a mosaic wall decoration. Perfect for hanging outside these add colour and sparkle to any garden. Make 2 items over the 2 day workshop, choose from  a house number, Dragonfly, Bumblebee or circular shaped design. 

Day 1 will involve preparation of the materials, design techniques and application of mosaic tiles. On day 2 you will grout your piece and prepare it for installation.

Bring the beauty and vibrant colours of Stained Glass to your garden or window sill in this informal and highly enjoyable introduction to stained glass.

Be creative in a new and very practical way!  No previous artistic background or experience is required.

Using the Copper-foiling technique made famous by Tiffany, there will be plenty of patterns, ideas and resources available to help you to create your very own decorative garden plant stake.

This course is open to complete beginners as well as those who have done it before.

Developing your Drawing Skills with Ronald Swanwick

Ronald believes that “Drawing is a skill not a gift” and on that basis he knows he can improve any persons drawing abilities in one day.

Ronald will cover perspective, scale and proportion, tone and texture working from still lives and photos.

All you need is a couple of pencils 1 x HB and 1 x 2B
A sketch pad of paper. Preferably thick say 160 gsm.
Ronald will bring the everything else.

Cat, Fox or Hare (Hard Fabric) Sculpture with Jackie Ginley
Wednesday 17th - Friday 19th July 2019 - 10:00 - 16:00

Some of you may have met Ragtaggle Huffinpew at the Kingshill House Hare Exhibition last summer.

This year he has persuaded two friends Lady Florabelle (a cat with a passion for flowers) and Sir Ferdinand Sly (a fox with a colourful past) to pose for a sculpture workshop.

We will be using recycled materials; dowels, wire and fabric to create a sculpture of a cat, hare or fox. A wide choice of colours and materials will be available for you to decorate your chosen animal.

Indian Block Printing with Caroline Lambert and Nigel Ginley

Why not join Caroline and Nigel for a fantastic day of block printing on fabric?

You don't need to be an artist to enjoy Indian Block Printing!  In this relaxed session, you will learn how easy it is to create wonderful images on a range of fabric items such as T towels, aprons, bags etc. using traditional hand carved Indian wood blocks and fabric paints.

​Between them Caroline and Nigel have a wonderful collection of Indian wood blocks for you to choose from, and you won't believe how simple it is to get some really fantastic results.

Pyrography Keepsake/Memory Box with Tina Crosbie

Learn the art of “Writing with Fire” using a Pyrography machine and colouring your design with Watercolour pencils.

Start the day with a bit of practice by creating a Celtic Coaster. You will then move on to creating a design for your memory box and putting into practice what you have learnt to make your own unique memory box

Mixed Media Drawing with Rita Dee

Maybe you’ve been on holiday somewhere and thought how great it would be to sketch a sea view, a street scene or a garden, or perhaps you have done a bit of painting and would like to try something different and work from your own sketches. Everybody can enjoy drawing no matter what they have been told at school.
 
This course will introduce lots of different drawing media and techniques, including pencil, soft pastels, oil pastels, pen and charcoal. We will start with lots of short exercises with the emphasis on fun and experimentation and the tutor will show you what can be achieved with the various media and how they can be combined to good effect. Suitable subjects will be provided for you to work from but if you have a particular interest you are welcome to bring your own subject matter.

Introduction to Print Making with Beth Jenkins

A good introduction to a number of printmaking techniques that can be used on their own, or with other methods.  Over the two days, you will learn how to make monoprints, collaged card prints, relief printing and drypoint etching. 
 
By the end of the workshops, you will have a good working knowledge of different types of print, how you could continue printing at home and which processes you like best.  You will take home a variety of black and white and full colour prints.

Silk Painting Suncatchers with Sophie Tallis

An introduction to the most delicate and ancient of art forms – painting on silk.
 
Different from silk screen printing, silk paintings are one-off original artworks painted on real Habotai and Pongee silk.
 
During this relaxed and friendly workshop you will be guided through the process of creating your own silk paintings, from the design stage, to stretching the silk, to applying the gutta outliner and applying the silk paints themselves, as well as creating a few special effects!
 
Using summer flowers as inspiration you will create two flowery silk paintings during the workshop, one suncatcher or wooden framed piece for hanging from a window or wall and another stretched silk painting ready for framing or giving as a gift.

Welcome to the wonderful world of crochet!  This traditional craft ties you in to generations of craftspeople and it’s intriguing, creative and also relaxing and meditative - all while you make something useful (for yourself or for gifts).
 
In this beginners’ introduction to crochet, you'll learn how to crochet a chain and to work Double and Treble crochet stitches, and will make some squares to practise (including the famous “granny square”).   You can make more squares the same at home to make a scarf, cushion cover, bag or similar...  Plus, you’ll learn:

  • how to join your squares together
  • how to count  rows and stitches
  • simple crochet terminology
  • basics of reading written and charted crochet patterns

Jewellery Making With Seed Beads with Ann Tucker

This workshop is perfect for anyone who has never worked with seed beads and a needle and thread as you will learn basic techniques to enable you to create further projects in future if you wish. 

​It is also an opportunity for more experienced Beaders to try new patterns and techniques.  We will start by making a simple, but very wearable bracelet in your choice of colours, before creating our own beaded beads, which you will be able to combine as you wish, to create earrings or a bracelet

Sterling Silver Spinner Ring with Wendy Murphy

During this informative and friendly class, Wendy will guide you through your design and the traditional silversmithing techniques of cutting, filing, soldering and polishing your way to making your own sterling silver spinner ring. You can also texture your piece to give it a reflective hammered look and take it away at the end.

​This workshop is an ideal workshop for learning cutting, filing and soldering skills and suitable for beginners and improvers alike. Students can progress onto further workshops to make a pendant, earrings, bangle, gem setting and more.

Introduction to Hot Glass with Ben Gough

Providing a unique insight into the ancient art of glassblowing, you will learn basic hot glass forming techniques using hand tools to shape the molten glass. Choosing from a range of colours, you will be guided step by step to produce a bauble and a blown glass vase.
