1900s -The Awdry Family
Emma Margaret Ruscombe Poole was the younger child of Margaret and Arthur, born in 1878. She married John West Awdry and they had three children together - John, Vere and Diana. They lived at Kingshill with Emma's mother, Margaret Sealey Poole.
Emma Poole followed her mother and great-aunt into a life of public service; during World War One, she was 'instrumental' in the establishment of the Red Cross Hospital at Standish House, later to be known as Standish Hospital.
Her daughter Diana was heavily influenced by the women in her family and was hugely involved in local politics and community affairs - eventually becoming J.P. and following in the legal tradition set by her grandfather, Arthur Ruscome Poole Q.C.
